Some days, choosing yourself looks like doing the thring you tried to talk yourself out of.

I did not want to get up this morning.

I did not sleep that well.

I did not want to get up and start feeling the body aches and pains. You know, those little warning signs that something is wrong...

But I am here anyway!!!

Showing up for myself.

Why does it have to be so damn hard sometimes? lol

I think part of this journey is learning to accept things for what they are and move through them instead of constantly fighting against them.

Yesterday morning on my walk, I had an idea.

My current route takes me about 12 minutes to complete. So what if I made a commitment to 365 Days of Walking?!

Rain. Snow. Heat. Whatever.

It is 12 minutes.

And I am sure I will improve on that speed the more I do it. Maybe some days I will go farther. Maybe some days those 12 minutes will be all I have in me. But the point is to get out there and DO IT.

That idea is actually what got me out of bed this morning.

I did not want to get up, and I asked myself:

You really want to quit on Day 3?

And then the justifications started...

“You didn’t sleep well, and sleep is important too.”

“You have 24 hours to get your walk in today. You don’t have to do it this morning.”

Knowing damn well that I probably wouldn’t do it if I didn’t get my ass out of bed and do it this morning.

So, I’m here!!!

Doing the thing I don’t want to do.

Not because I suddenly feel motivated. Not because it is easy. Not because I woke up excited to do it.

But because my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health NEED IT.

I am making myself a priority.

And maybe that is the lesson for today.

You don't always have to WANT to do the thing.

Sometimes you just have to stop negotiating with yourself long enough to take the first step.

Whatever you are trying to change in your own life, make the commitment small enough that you can still show up on the hard days. And when your brain starts giving you every perfectly reasonable excuse for why today should be the exception, ask yourself whether you truly need the rest—or whether you are just trying to talk yourself out of showing up.

You don't have to conquer the whole damn journey today.

Just don't quit on yourself today.

Journal Prompts

  1. What is one small commitment I could make to myself every day that would support the person I am trying to become?

  2. What excuses or justifications tend to show up when I don't feel like following through, and what are they really trying to protect me from?

  3. What would making myself a priority look like today, even if I don't feel motivated?

Now, I’m going for my walk.
